The MITRE Corporation (USA)

The MITRE Corporation (USA) is a Winner of the 2016/2017 Global Sustainable Development Award and Accredited as a Global 500 Sustainable Development Agencies of the year 2016/2017 in appreciation of its contribution towards Social-Economic Development of the USA through Offering high quality scientific and analysis to the Government of the United States of America (USA) hence a contribution to Global peace and development. Awarded and Accredited by Public Opinions International (Uganda-East Africa).

Public Opinions International is a Partner and Member of International Organisation for Educational Development (IOED) and International Police Commission which is is in  Consultative Status with the United Nations Economic and Social Council (Newyork,USA).

MITRE is a not-for-profit organization that operates research and development centers sponsored by the federal government.

We operate FFRDCs—federally funded research and development centers—which are unique organizations that assist the United States government with:

  • Scientific research and analysis
  • Development and acquisition
  • Systems engineering and integration

We also have an independent research program that explores new and expanded uses of technologies to solve our sponsors' problems.

MITRE is chartered to work in the public interest. We have no commercial interests. We have no owners or shareholders, and we can't compete for anything except the right to operate FFRDCs. This lack of commercial conflicts of interest forms the basis for our objectivity. We also have the ability to acquire sensitive and proprietary information from the government and industry to inform our work. These organizations are able and willing to share data because they know we won't use it for a competitive advantage.

Moreover, because we operate multiple FFRDCs, we foster a culture of knowledge sharing. We apply what we learn from addressing one sponsor's challenges to similar issues faced by other federal agencies. This means when sponsors engage with us, they have access to all the minds of MITRE.

OUR HISTORY

Advancing science and technology in the public interest—from the dawn of the Information Age to today

MITRE's roots began in the computer laboratories of the Massachusetts Institute of Technology (MIT) during World War II. Throughout the 1940s and early 1950s, MIT's scientists developed the first large-scale digital computer, dubbed Whirlwind I. A group of engineers working at MIT Lincoln Laboratory's Division 6 continued to expand its capabilities. When the Air Force needed a framework on which to build an advanced air-defense system, it chose Whirlwind I.

In July 1958, The MITRE Corporation was chartered as a private, not-for-profit corporation to provide engineering and technical guidance for the federal government—with an initial focus on defense needs. Following the closure of Division 6, most of the research staff joined MITRE to support the Air Force's air-defense mission.

The new company took on the task of developing SAGE—the Semi-Automatic Ground Environment pioneering continental air-defense system. SAGE's complexity demanded an organization that could reach across traditional boundaries among the military, industry, and academia.

Our role integrating SAGE's many elements established us as a leader in the new discipline of systems engineering. That was just the beginning.

In the decades since, we've earned an international reputation for technical excellence and innovation for military and civil agencies. The company and our employees have received many awards recognizing our achievements in aviation, defense, cybersecurity, and much more.

We're proud to have served the public interest for more than 50 years. We look forward to continuing to serve.

Our Mission

One public interest company, working with industry and academia to advance and apply science, technology, systems engineering, and strategy, enabling government and the private sector to make better decisions and implement solutions to complex challenges of national and global significance.

Our Values

MITRE's values are the cornerstones of our organization.

Commitment to the Public Interest

We value commitment to the right outcome for the mission and have no other interests.

People in Partnership

We value our people as our most important asset. We emphasize shared responsibility for growth, partnership with the government, collaboration within and without, and the ability to maintain a balanced lifestyle.

Excellence that Counts

We value the application of technical, operational, and managerial excellence to provide objective solutions to critical problems. We invest in and foster world-class infrastructure, technology, management, and most importantly, people.

Integrity Above all Else

Exercising the highest possible ethical and professional standards is fundamental to how MITRE operates. As a public-service organization, we adhere to a Code of Ethics & Conduct, founded in honesty and fairness, supported by the professional integrity of each employee.

AWARDS AND RECOGNITIONS

Because our only business is to operate federally funded research and development centers (FFRDCs), as we learn valuable lessons from addressing one government agency's challenges, we can apply this knowledge to other, related challenges.

Knowledge sharing has been a core value at MITRE since our beginning. Developing the Semi-Automated Ground Environment integrated defense system required a unique combination of military, operational, and technical knowledge and experience from government, industry and academia. Since then, MITRE has grown in scope and size and established offices across the country and on several continents. This greater complexity has only reinforced our commitment to making knowledge sharing an ingrained habit.

From Knowledge Sharing to Knowledge Management

As a company grounded in systems engineering, we take an equally systematic approach to knowledge sharing that's called "knowledge management." KM involves integrated, process-oriented methods that promote rapid learning through knowledge creation and dissemination. Individuals learn from others' experiences with the goal of gaining insights and adding their own. Without such processes, companies run the risk of losing important knowledge over time and executing less efficiently – particularly for programs that last many years, as most government programs do.

MITRE's award-winning KM program also enables us to further our sponsors' missions by taking advantage of both internal resources and external expertise. To do this, we:

  • Foster knowledge exchange among individuals and groups, promote knowledge capture and reuse, and transfer knowledge collected over time to the people who need it most.
  • Support reach back—the ability of staff anywhere in MITRE to benefit from their colleagues' experiences on related challenges.
  • Develop innovative collaboration tools, such as our Handshake social networking platform and MITRE Partnership Network, which allow for secure collaboration on a large scale among our employees and their government, academic, and industry partners.

These are among the reasons our government partners trust us to retain the historical memory for ongoing programs.

Learn More and Contribute to the Knowledge-Sharing Conversation

As part of MITRE's public-interest mission, we are sharing our practices in developing our "knowledge driven enterprise" (KDE) so other companies can learn from our experiences. This multi-faceted strategy builds KM into all elements of an organization to support internal and external stakeholders.

We invite you to learn more about the MITRE KDE community by visiting the KDE website, access our papers and presentations, and share your own knowledge and experiences through our blog.
