Youth Alive Uganda

YOUTH ALIVE UGANDA was accredited a Responsible Agency by Public Opinions International on 15th November 2016 in recognition and appreciation of its contributions towards Social-economic Transformation of Uganda as well as its contribution towards realisation of Uganda Vision 2040 and United Nations Sustainable Development Goals in Uganda

Youth Alive Uganda was started by a group of youth under the guidance of Sr. Dr. Miriam Duggan in kamwokya, a Kampala suburb which was severely affected by a diversity of social and health problems, chief among them HIV&AIDS. The group realized that the most infected and affected were youth; mainly adolescents and young adults. In response, a youth friendly HIV prevention strategy was designed resulting in the foundation of Youth Alive Uganda, Starting as a peer support group. As more groups were established, the first one became the Secretariat on 1 July 1993 and fully registered as an NGO in 1995. Youth Alive Uganda has since then spread to 17 other African countries and still continues to spread.

Whereas the advent of AIDS in Africa catalyzed the formation of Youth Alive Uganda, the long term vision is about fullness of life amidst and beyond the pandemic. With a peer to peer approach, the Education for Life program implementers have worked to impart relevant knowledge, life skills and values that contribute towards bridging these gaps. The key strategy for program implementation is behaviors change communication.

While in the service of caring for those infected with AIDS, Sr. Dr. Miriam Duggan perceived that the greater challenge was to prevent the Youth from acquiring HIV/AIDS. It also was realized that the Youth today get too many negative messages and what is needed is a positive approach to encourage them to take responsibility for their health and life, and to show them through life experiences that this is possible.
