Fisheries Training Institute (FTI) was established in 1968 by an Act of Parliament to train candidates for technical manpower requirement of the Fisheries Industry.

It developed to provide comprehensive training of Fisheries Assistants in Fisheries Management and Technologies, and Technical Assistants in Yacht and Boat-Building Technology at certificate level.

Its mission was to develop proficiency in those fields for enhancement of increased fish production and rational utilization of fish and fish products in the country.

The curriculum for FTI was designed to cope with the increasing interaction of science and technology, which necessitated dissemination of new fisheries techniques and technology.

Since inauguration, the student enrolment steadily grew from only 45 male students to the current 223 male and female students undertaking certificate and diploma courses. On the present record, however, FTI has since inception graduated 2259, Certificate 977 male and 121 female; Diploma 978 male and 184 female respectively.

FTI is now a Tertiary Institution of Higher Education under the Ministry of Agriculture Animal Industry and Fisheries. It is governed by a 16 member Governing Council, according to the University and Other Tertiary Institution Act, 2001. It remains the sole and popular Institute of Fresh Water Fisheries training in Uganda and the Great Lake Region.
