Abu Dhabi National Chemicals Company (ChemaWEyaat) was established by Emiri decree in November 2008 to enhance Abu Dhabi’s involvement in the domestic chemical industry while complementing Abu Dhabi National Oil Company (ADNOC)’s subsidiaries: Abu Dhabi Polymers Company (Borouge) (polyethylene and polypropylene based on ethane); Borouge Pte (marketing) in Singapore; Ruwais Fertilizers Industry (FERTIL) (methane-based fertilizer plants); in addition to International Petroleum Investment Company’s (IPIC) international chemical subsidiaries. ChemaWEyaat is jointly owned by IPIC (40%), Abu Dhabi Investment Council (40%) and ADNOC (20%).

ChemaWEyaat chemical complexes will be developed in a new chemical city, Madeenat ChemaWEyaat Al Gharbia, on a 60 square km plot to the east of Ruwais Industrial Complex in the western region of Abu Dhabi. A master plan for the utilization of this area was completed at the end of 2011. In addition, ChemaWEyaat has more than 7 square km of land in Taweelah for future projects.

The first ChemaWEyaat project to be completed in 2018 will comprise the Tacaamol Aromatics Plant (TAP), a world-scale aromatics complex producing 1.4m tonnes/year of paraxylene (PX) and 0.5m tonnes/year of benzene, and infrastructure development of Madeenat ChemaWEyaat Al Gharbia to the extent needed to support TAP in line with the master plan.

Tacaamol Aromatics Plant will be developed with Indorama Ventures Public Company based on a joint venture agreement signed in December 2013. ChemaWEyaat will hold 51% equity and Indorama 49% in the company.
